Valley of Growth (2024)

Directed by Rachel Burnett

Two women climbers, one a veteran and the other a novice, work together to reshape the climbing community in an ever-evolving landscape. Within their individual journeys of personal growth, Kate Rutherford and Kiyomi James aim to close the divide between nature and humanity as they fall into their new roles of mentorship. Through their shared passions, they strive to redefine the limits of who truly belongs in Yosemite, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring landmarks.

“Valley of Growth was an unexpected gift that transformed my life. When I first embarked on the filming journey in GreenScreen, a 10-week production class at UCSB, the idea seemed simple: highlight the incredible work of women in the climbing community. As a woman in the climbing community myself, I felt drawn to tell these stories that have long been underrepresented. The whirlwind filming process connected our team with a diverse group of women across California, allowing us to hear many inspiring stories and perspectives on the role women play in the climbing space. Once we met Kate Rutherford and Kiyomi James through the nonprofit Farm to Crag, we knew we had struck gold. Despite their age gap and different levels of experience, there were clear parallels in their goals and journeys, as they both saw the positive impact that climbers could make on the world. Spending time with these two women was truly empowering for me since I was quickly approaching my college graduation during the production. I was scared of the unknown that would soon encompass my life, but hearing Kate and Kiyomi’s visions provided me with the hope I needed. Their work truly showcases how women in the climbing community can be forces of nature when they show up as their authentic selves and take the time to find their unique passion. What started as an interest in telling these underrepresented stories became a pillar of inspiration for my crew and me during a period of uncertainty. I’m eager to share the story’s message with other women who may need the glimmer of hope I once did.”
