COWS (2025)
From the age of 2, cows were my favorite animal. They became a permanent fixture in my life as stuffed cows filled my bed, and I excitedly shrieked every time I saw one. The joy that the animal sparked in me has stayed with me till this day, though I am now aware of a much darker reality.
Cattle are a leading agricultural source of greenhouse gases and are severely exploited within the industry. Yet they remain deeply integrated into our daily lives as most people, including myself, regularly consume dairy and beef. I have milk in coffee, have cheese most days, and enjoy a steak from time to time. Cows are part of my life in more ways than one, which begs the question: Am I part of the problem?
Although one individual cannot be blamed for the climate crisis, it is difficult not to struggle with guilt as an environmentally conscious person. Cows was my solution to exploring this personal conflict, allowing me to reflect on how the animal has impacted my life. Through the process, I found deep appreciation for them as I watched them graze and admired them for what they are beyond the product. This personal study has resulted in ten silver gelatin prints that highlight the underappreciated beauty of cows and the resources they provide.
